Fun with Felting! April 15, 2008

I’m the kind of person who hates to throw anything away – this is probably part of the reason I love using mill end wool for my yarns so much. As a consequence of my inability to throw away even the smallest bit of fiber, I have a ziplock bag that’s full of all those little tiny odd pieces of roving that you end up with when you spin yarn. I’ve been thinking for a while that I should get hand carders and card them together, but that’s not really in my budget right now. So instead, I’ve been playing around with making felted beads.

Kinda cool, right? I actually really like making these now, but it took me a while to actually make beads that looked decent. I finally figured out the trick though – you have to start out rolling the bead really really really softly, like almost not even touching it. If you put too much pressure on it at the beginning the bead gets cracks in it and basically falls apart. I haven’t decided if I’m going to list these in my Etsy shop or just keep them to use in my own projects.

Have a fabulous Tuesday!

Weekend Review – The Tudors April 6, 2008

I don’t know about you guys, but I can’t spin, knit, or do anything crafty without watching TV or a movie! But lately there never seems to be anything decent on TV when I spin during the day, and I’ve gotten tired rewatching my tiny collection of movies. So I’ve turned to sidereel.com, a website that links you to places where you can watch practically any TV show online (often, I’ve found, with Japanese subtitles, which is slightly annoying but nothing I can’t deal with). This week I’ve gotten really into The Tudors.

I’m just loving this show! Amazing costumes, great casting choices (especially Queen Catherine and Anne Boleyn), and an exciting plot, with tons of action in every episode, makes this show extremely entertaining. And I think the fact that everyone knows how the story ended makes it even better, since this way you get to watch it unfold. Sure, there’s lots of gratuitous sex scenes and it’s not totally historically accurate, but it sure is fun to watch!

In other news, I’m pretty sure I broke one of my toes (the littlest one on my right foot). My whole foot is starting to go numb and it’s getting hard to walk, so I’m pretty sure I’m going to have to go and spend most of tomorrow at the doctor. Crap.

Hope your Monday is wonderful!

Beads! April 2, 2008

I’ve been itching to try something new with my spinning lately, and I think I’ve come up with just the thing – spinning yarn with beads! I’ve been dreaming up all kinds of gorgeous plied yarns with beads lately, so I got myself down to my local craft store and picked up some inexpensive beads to start experimenting with.

Pretty blue crystals.

And just for fun, some funny multi-colored fish.

I just love these pictures! I think I’ve finally figured out the macro function on my camera.

The only beads I have plans for so far are the stars. Hopefully I’ll have a finished yarn to show in the next few days!

Enjoy the rest of your Wednesday!
